The McLean Institute

The McLean Institute (the Institute) is the sole owner of Holly Lea Village Limited.

The Institute currently fully supports several women in line with the Last Will and Codicil of the late Allan McLean (1822-1907), who left part of his estate with the specific intent to provide care for women in the gracious surroundings of “Holly Lea”.

At law, The McLean Institute is a Charitable Trust, incorporated by Act of Parliament - The McLean Institute Act (1909)

To ensure his wishes were carried out in perpetuity, Allan McLean stipulated that the Institute be formed and governed by a Board made up of persons by virtue of their senior office in the City of Christchurch. These board members are listed below on the left. The various acts of parliament governing the Institute, and the details of a book available for sale by the Institute detailing the history of the Institute are below on the right. Allan McLean 1822-1907

This unique mix of Board membership has ensured a diverse range of expertise is brought to the Board room by the most senior people of each particular represented body. This representation is largely the reason the Institute has continued to provide unique, gracious accommodation and care for women for nearly 100 years.

Just prior to its centennial year 2008 the Institute commenced redevelopment of the Holly Lea site (3 acres in Fendalton) to become a retirement village investment open to both men and women.

At this time the Board also explored the second charitable dimension stipulated by Allan McLean's will; to assist women in need, some coping with young families. This secondary charity work will commence following the completion and establishment of the Holly Lea retirement village.

The Institute's accounts are audited and an extract published annually in the Press.
